PTV Optima: from offline to online

PTV Group and KKE present real-time traffic solutions at ITS World Congress Tokyo

Karlsruhe/Tokyo, 7 October 2013. Japan's capital has been chosen as the host of the 2020 Summer Olympics. The expectations of a positive effect on the economy are very high. This is also true of the transportation sector and should push forward discussions on efficient transportation systems, intermodality and traffic management at the ITS World Congress in Tokyo. Together with its Japanese partner Kozo Keikaku Engineering (KKE), PTV Group will be presenting its solutions at ITS World Tokyo (booth #067), 14 - 18 October 2013. One of the product highlights: PTV Optima – a tool which provides dynamic traffic predictions that are ahead of "real" time.

The Greater Tokyo conurbation is the world's largest metropolitan area. Around 80 per cent of all trips are made by public transport. And yet: Japan's metropolis has to cope with notorious traffic congestion. "Construction leads to heavy traffic congestion around the city," says Yusuke Okahira, Product Manager, KKE. "Dynamic traffic projections could help us identify traffic problems before they arise and take appropriate measures, such as informing road users about alternative routes." PTV Optima is a tool that can manage these tasks. This model-based solution combines offline transport modelling method with real-time data and algorithms.

A glimpse into the near future

"As PTV Optima explicitly includes the network structure, traffic flow dynamics and the route choice behaviour of road users, it also analyses the traffic conditions on routes where no detectors are installed," says Dr.-Ing. Thomas Otterstätter, PTV Optima Product Manager, PTV Group. Moreover, the model-based solution can predict the impacts of unforeseen incidents and assess and compare various strategic actions. PTV Optima provides traffic forecasts which simulate a customizable time horizon of up to 60 minutes The user can immediately see the impact of traffic volume, speed and incidents on the relevant road sections.

Reacting more effectively to emerging crises

Another highlight presented by PTV Group and KKE at ITS World Congress will focus on how to enhance the ability to respond to critical incidents: Since the major earthquake which hit Japan's north-east region in 2011, the country has been sensitised to evacuation issues and has been working on appropriate solutions. "With artisoc ETE, KKE has developed a software solution which assists city councils in creating evacuation plans," says Yusuke Okahira. artisoc simulates and analyses the behaviour of evacuee under disaster situation and provides information about changed traffic conditions. "By combining our tool with the transportation planning software PTV Visum and the simulation software PTV Vissim, planners can use assignment procedures and microsimulation to analyse people's route choice behaviour and estimate evacuation time," Yusuke Okahira explains. Several scenarios can thus be created in advance so that cities are better prepared for crises.

PTV Visum processes travel demand data offline and provides PTV Optima with a basic simulation of the network. PTV Optima then uses real-time data from the traffic management system and provides up-to-date traffic information and traffic forecasts.
